New York Yankees lose to Baltimore Orioles 2-3 in Game 2 of ALDS – MLB Update
New York Yankees were beaten by the Baltimore Orioles 2-3 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Monday, October 8 in second game of their five match American League Divisional Series.
Orioles looked a bit rusty in opener but they were back to their best in Game 2, edging past their AL opponents 3-2 to level the series 1-1. Starter Wei Yin Chen had a great time on the mound as he gave up just two runs in six plus innings to lay the foundations
of an impressive Orioles’ victory.
Closer Jim Johnson also managed to put things back on track after he received a hammering in Game 1. He pitched the perfect ninth to help his side hold on to a one run lead.
Yankees’ starting pitcher Andy Pettitte also pitched with great control and accuracy but he was unfortunate to end up on the losing side. Allowing just seven hits and three runs in seven solid innings, he kept the Yankees in the game but the Orioles were
too hot to handle on Monday.
"It seemed like Baltimore and us have kind of gone back and forth all year and that's what we did here," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said.
Manager Joe Girardi will be very happy with what he saw from Pettitte and it will be interesting to see if Pettitte can continue his good work on his next starts to help Yankees reach World Series finals.
Robinson Cano doubled to deep right in the first inning to put Yankees on the board. Chris Davis and Mark Reynolds drove in crucial runs to give Orioles a vital 3-1 lead in the sixth inning.
"You definitely don't want to go into New York in a five-game series down two games. This is big -- having the day off tomorrow, hopefully building some momentum, and we can take that into New York," Davis said.
"Chen did a good job of keeping us in the game," Davis said. "To hold that offense to two runs is saying something, and we were able to get timely hits when we needed it."
Yankees’ Captain Derek Jeter singled to left in the seventh to reduce the lead to 2-3 but his effort did not prove to be enough.
