New York Yankees lose to Baltimore Orioles 4-5 – MLB Update
New York Yankees lost to the Baltimore Orioles 4-5 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Monday, July 30 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Eric Chavez provided the Yankees with a decent start but the Orioles were also determined to take control of the contest. Wilson Betemit homered to right in the third inning for Baltimore to level score 1-1.
Omar Quintanilla, who has given some impressive performances this season, had a sacrifice fly hit to centre and Nick Markakis drove in a run in the fifth to put immense pressure on Yankees’ offence. Nick Markakis and J.J. Hardy also drove in vital runs in
the seventh innings to give Orioles a decent 5-2 lead.
Chavez and Ichiro Suzuki both homered for the Yankees in the seventh but their effort did not prove to be enough as the Orioles held off their opponents to earn a well deserved victory.
Yankees’ starting pitcher Freddy Garcia took his fifth loss of the season after he gave up three runs and nine hits in six innings. Relief pitcher Boone Logan also looked a bit out of sorts as he allowed two runs in just 0.2 innings.
"I've had a little thing in my wrist before, back in 2009. Hopefully it will just get better in a few days," said Mark Teixeira, who missed the game due to a wrist injury. "You're always playing through something."
"The kid did a nice job tonight," Girardi said of Orioles’ starter Miguel Gonzalez. "He was successful with his changeup when he was behind in the count, and he was successful expanding the zone when he was ahead of the count"
Despite taking the loss of Monday, Joe Girardi and company are placed comfortably at the top of American League East Divisions standings. The last couple of weeks have not brought the best results for the Yankees.
With just three wins in their last ten games, there has been a huge dip in their form and it will be interesting to see if the Yankees can bounce back in Game 2 to give the home fans something to cheer about.
