New York Yankees lose to Cincinnati Reds 5-6 – MLB Update
New York Yankees lost to Cincinnati Reds 5-6 in a thrilling encounter at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Saturday, May 19 in the second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
The Yankees looked to attack their rivals right from the start of the contest and they were pretty much successful in their attempt to outclass the Reds in finer details of the game.
Credit must be given to the Yankees for the way they fought right till the end of the game but the effort did not prove to be enough as the Reds held their nerves to emerge victorious in a thrilling encounter.
Brandon Phillips provided the Reds with a superb start as he singled to right in the first inning to give his team an important 1-0 lead. C Heisey doubled to left in the second inning to extend the lead to 2-0 for Cincinnati.
New York scored their first run in the third, thanks to Russell Martin who hit a home
run to right field. Raul Ibanez also joined the party in the fourth with a doubled to shallow right and the Yankees leveled the score at 1-1.
"It wasn't fun the way it ended," Votto said. "Well, I take that back. It was fun the way it ended. Just a little bit nerve-racking at the end, but that's part of wins and losses and it was nice for Jose to come in and pick us up."
"We just didn't get the last hit that we needed," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said
"Overall, pitched a good game," said Red’s pitcher Homer Bailey. "I'd be lying if I said the anticipation wasn't there. The first couple pitches it looked like the plate was about 100 feet away."
Jayson Nix home run to the right brought the Yankees back into the game after the Reds had taken 5-2 lead in the fifth. Showing great determination, fighting spirit and mental strength, the Yankees ended the game on an emphatic note as Nix drove in a crucial
run to reduce Reds’ advantage to 5-6.
However, the Reds held on to their slight advantage to seal a stunning victory.
