New York Yankees lose to Detroit Tigers 5-6 in Game 2 – MLB Update
New York Yankees lost to Detroit Tigers in 5-6 in a thrilling encounter at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Tuesday, August 7 in second game of their four match series of 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Both teams displayed some top quality baseball skills as momentum shifted from one way to the other. Tigers showed great character and composure as they held their nerves to prevail.
Relief pitcher Jose Valverde was put under immense pressure by the Yankees in the ninth inning. However, despite giving up two runs on three hits in his only inning pitched, Valverde held on to grab his 22nd save of the season.
Eric Chavez hit a towering two run home-run to left in the fourth inning to break the deadlock and put New York on the board but the Tigers responded fiercely.
Third baseman Miguel Cabrera continued his impressive hitting form as he connected for a solo home-run against Yankees’ starting pitcher Phil Hughes to bring the Tigers back into the contest.
"He's one of the best hitters in the game, and you never want to let him beat you," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said about Cabrera. "The problem is that if you pitch around him, the next guy (Prince Fielder) is pretty good, too."
"I was pretty tired myself -- that was like doing a full round of batting practice in one at-bat," Tigers’ Brennan Boesch said after his single on a nine pitch at bat. "I think every hitter knows that if you have lengthy at-bats, it helps the team, because
a pitcher's whole job is to have quick innings.”
Cabrera later doubled to deep left in the fifth and Andy Dirks doubled to deep right in the sixth as Detroit came back from behind to clinch a valuable 5-2 lead.
For the Yankees, veteran Ichiro Suzuki showed just what he is capable of as he drove in two runs in the seventh and the ninth to add spice to the proceedings.
Russell Martin added an RBI double to deep left in the bottom of the ninth to reduce the deficit to 5-6 but the Tigers, somehow, survived the onslaught to take 2-0 series lead.
