New York Yankees lose to Philadelphia Phillies – MLB Spring Training Recap
New York Yankees got off to the worst possible Spring Training start as they received a 3-9 hammering from Philadelphia Phillies at the Bright House Networks here in Clearwater, Florida. The Yankees made too many unforced errors during the contest, which played a crucial part in deciding the outcome of the clash. The Phillies, on the other hand, made the most of available opportunities to inflict a defeat on their rivals.
Joe Blanton was absolutely brilliant in pitching department of the game as he pitched two shutout innings to help the Phillies ease past the Yankees 9-3 in a fairly one sided contest. The right handed thrower appeared in only a handful of Major League Baseball games in 2011 due to various forms of injuries. It will be interesting to see if he can perform consistently this season to make a name for himself.
Phillies’ third baseman Placido Polanco provided his team with a confident start as he drove in the game’s first run. Polanco also had an injury troubled season last year. He will be looking to deliver the goods consistently to change the course of his career.
"I'm very happy. I dove for a ball and didn't feel anything," Polanco said. "I didn't expect anything because I've been here for a while and I've done a lot of stuff. But game situations are a little bit different when you're out there. But I felt really good."
"I'm very excited today," Pineda said. “It's a little different because in Seattle, you don't have a lot of media at spring training. Right now, I feel a little more comfortable with my changeup. It's a good pitch for me, because I'm (using) the same mechanics for the fastball."
Michael Pineda, who was acquired from Seattle Mariners earlier this year, also displayed some high quality throwing skills for the Yankees. Holding the Phillies to just one hit in two shutout innings, the 23 year old did not disappoint his fans. As a rookie, Pineda made it to the All Star team last season and it will be exciting to see the difference he makes to Yankees’ pitching attack.
