New York Yankees lose to Pittsburgh Pirates 4-7 – MLB Spring Training Update
New York Yankees lost to Pittsburgh Pirates 4-7 at the McKechnie Field, Bradenton, Florida on Tuesday, March 6 in their Grapefruit league clash of the 2012 Major League Baseball Spring Training Session. The Yankees wasted too many opportunities during the contest, which eventually led to their downfall. The Pirates, on the other, converted almost every scoring opportunity to get an ideal start to their Spring Training campaign.
Pirates’ Andrew McCutchen displayed some high quality hitting skills during the game. After signing on a new contract on Tuesday, the outfielder was congratulated by Yankees’ players including Mark Teixeira, Robinson Cano and Derek Jeter. The striker looked in commanding form in 2011 as he posted his career best season with 23 home runs, 89 RBI’s and 23 stolen bases.
Agreeing to a six year $51.5 million second largest contract in Pirates’ history, McCutchen wasted no time living up to his immense potential. The All Star centre-fielder collected two hits and two RBI’s to help his team floor New York Yankees.
"I was looking forward to it being over so I could exhale," McCutchen said. "When I signed and shook hands with the owner, I was able to breathe and say, `All right, let's go play the Yankees."
Yankees’ ace C.C. Sabathia also displayed some high quality throwing skills over two innings pitched. Allowing only one run and three hits to the Pirates’ batter, he was the last man standing for the Yankees. Showing his strength and temperament, he made 35 pitches and was very happy with the outcome.
"I've still got work to do, but my arm feels good and my body feels good. I feel strong," Sabathia said. "Being able to throw my off-speed pitches for strikes by the end of spring is really big for me. I threw some good cutters today and a good changeup."
New York Yankees is one of the strongest teams in American League. However, they have not been able to deliver the goods in Spring Training until now. It will be interesting to see if they can turn the tables in their upcoming games.
