New York Yankees lose to Seattle Mariners 2-4 – MLB Update
New York Yankees continued to show vulnerability as they lost to the Seattle Mariners 2-4 at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington on Tuesday, July 24 in second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Curtis Granderson had an excellent time on the plate as he hit a home-run to right in the first inning to put the Yankees 1-0 ahead. Mark Teixeira hit a sacrifice fly to centre in the eighth to keep the Yankees in the game. However, apart from Granderson
and Teixeira none of the hitters could come up with the scoring shots.
For Seattle, Michael Saunders homered in the first inning to level the score 1-1. Jesus Montero and Joe Jaso also made useful contributions with the bat.
Yankees’ starting pitcher Freddy Garcia took his fourth loss of the season after he gave up five hits and three runs in seven plus innings. Mariners’ starter Felix Hernandez, on the other hand, allowed just two runs and four hits for his ninth win of the
year.
"You hate to see a guy go down on something freak like that," Yankees' first baseman Mark Teixeira said of Alex Rodriguez, who apparently broke his hand. "I had a weird feeling it wasn't good."
"You find out how good you are. Other guys are going to have to step up. We can't feel sorry for ourselves because no one else is going to," Captain Derek Jeter said. "It's going to be a challenge, but it's been a challenge for all the injuries we've had
this season."
The last few days have brought some poor results for Joe Girardi and company. After suffering a humiliating series sweep at the hands of Oakland Athletics, the Yankees were looking to put things back on track in their series against the Mariners.
Although they won the series opener 4-1 quite comprehensively, their weaknesses were again exposed on Tuesday. Despite losing five out of their last six games, New York is occupying first place on the big bad American League East Division and it will be
great upset if they fail to make it to the playoffs from their current situation.
