New York Yankees lose to Seattle Mariners 2-6 – MLB Update
Seattle Mariners finally managed to find winning ways against New York Yankees, securing a comfortable 6-2 win at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Sunday, May 13 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Yankees will be disappointed to lose to the Mariners after they made the most of available opportunities in the first two games to take a decisive 2-0 lead. Mariners made an impressive start to the contest, thanks to Justin Smoak who homered to the left to give them 2-0 lead in the fourth inning.
Mark Teixeira and Nick Swisher brought the Yankees back into the contest with a wonderful piece of play in the fifth which reduced Seattle’s lead to 1-2. Casper Wells then homered to the right in the sixth to dent New York’s confidence levels as the Mariners took 4-1 lead.
Robinson Cano and Eric Chavez, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez put up a brilliant fight for the Yankees in the eighth and it seemed they will win the game in a dramatic fashion. However, Wells infield single in the ninth helped Mariners secure a much needed victory, which also shattered New York’s dreams.
"I thought it was so awesome. I was so excited. I know we lost today and that's what a lot of people are going to focus on -- I could really care less about that," Nick Swisher said. "We got our boy back."
"To me it looked like he hadn't missed a beat," Girardi said.
"There is not a question in my mind how this is all going to play out for me," Yankees starting pitcher Andy Pettitte said. "It's not about this one start. I'll measure if this was a successful return or not at the end of October."
Of course, the result was not what the Yankees’ Manager Joe Girardi was hoping for but he will be very pleased with the way his team responded to some difficult situations throughout the series. Mariners’ starting pitcher Kevin Millwood allowed just three hits in seven solid innings to help his team avoid the series sweep.
