New York Yankees lose to Tampa Bay Rays 3-7 – MLB Update
New York Yankees lost to Tampa Bay Rays 3-7 at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Thursday, June 7 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Joe Girardi and company will be extremely disappointed with their effort on Thursday evening after putting up a heroic show in the opening two games of the series. The Rays took complete advantage of Yankees’ unforced errors on the field, scoring runs freely.
New York had a great chance to grab the first place at the top of American League Central Division standings.
Jose Lobaton had an excellent nigh with the bat as he earned an RBI single to right in the second inning to put the Rays 1-0 ahead. Chris Stewart grounded out to second to help the Yankees level score at 1-1.
Ben Zobrist helped the Rays take a crucial 2-1 lead in the third, thanks to an RBI single to centre and B.J. Upton extended the lead to 3-1 with a sacrifice fly to centre. Drew Sutton displayed some top quality hitting skills driving in three runs in the
fourth and the ninth innings.
Raul Ibanez scored the second run for New York with a single to centre and Russell Martin hit a might home run to right in the ninth but the effort did not prove to be sufficient.
"That was the game, I thought." Maddon said. "That was the game. That game could have gone the other way."
"We gave them an extra out," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I thought CC threw pretty well, they just put their hits together. He kept us in the game."
"It's a good lineup, that team," Sabathia said. "They're always at the top of the division."
Rays’ starting pitcher David Price had a confrontation with Yankees’ Robinson Cano and he was taken off in the fifth inning. However, despite having his troubles on the field, he went on to record his eighth win of the season. Striking out eight and allowing
just one run, he became the AL leader in wins. Yankees’ ace C.C Sabathia pitched with great control and accuracy, striking out 12 to match his career high with 121 pitches.
