New York Yankees lose to Tampa Bay Rays 4-6 – MLB Update
New York Yankees were beaten by the Tampa Bay Rays 4-6 at Yankee Stadium in New York, on Friday, September 14 in the opening game of their three match series.
Derek Jeter will be disgusted with what he saw from the pitching rotation on Friday. Yankees were hoping to continue their winning streak to reclaim their number one status on the American League East Division standings table but that did not turn out to
be the case.
Rays executed their game plan to perfection to outclass their opponents in almost all aspects of the game. Starting pitcher David Price, in particular, made the difference as he pitched seven solid innings, allowing just five hits and two runs to grab his
18th win of the season.
Price has been in commanding form since the start of the season. Surely, he will be looking to carry over the momentum into the playoffs to help his side make it to the World Series finals.
Yankees’ starter C.C. Sabathia also pitched with great control and accuracy but he was unfortunate to end up on the losing side. Overall, Sabathia gave up just six hits and four runs in six plus innings to take his sixth loss of the season. Relief pitchers
Cody Eppley and Joba Chamberlain were also unable to stop the flow of runs.
"That was a big game for us, facing CC and that lineup," Price said. "We were up to the task."
"We had two Cy Young candidates pitch for us tonight," Maddon said. "Two guys at the top of their game. It was fun to watch."
"I still believe in CC," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said. "There's a guy that's done so many special things for us here. So I still believe in him."
Scott Pearce singled to centre in the second inning to put Yankees on the board. Curtis Granderson hit a two run home-run in the fifth inning to keep his side in the contest. Alex Rodriguez also connected for a two run shot in the eighth but the Rays were
too hot to handle on Friday.
The Yankees will be disappointed with their performance against the Rays and try to work on their weak areas in their next game.
