New York Yankees may announce Derek Jeter deal soon
Major League Baseball is enjoying the off-season period with a flurry of trade news and it’s one of the most active months in baseball, as teams from all over the National League and the American League are looking to sign on good
players to the squad. The intention for restructuring is simple and it doesn’t take any genius to understand the dynamics of the situation. Teams are looking to add more power to their squad in the coming days and that has a time limit stretched to the start
of the spring training period.
The New York Yankees are particularly active in the market. They first released Javier Vazquez and conceded his services to the Florida Marlins. Then they tailed Cliff Lee, ever since the off-season period began in November. The
intention with the management is clear and the team is trying its best to sign the top pitcher in the market as soon as possible. On the other hand, there has been an initiative to bring Andy Pettitte back, who is still isn’t sure when to retire.
However, while there has been activity elsewhere, two of the biggest names in the Yankees squad have been headlining the agenda for a long time. Mariano ‘Enter Sandman’ Rivera has been trying to find his way back to the side on
a multiyear contract. Then, there is Derek Jeter who has been a leading target for the Yanks. He and his agent are looking for larger compensations and while the Steinbrenner brothers have protested, the Captain has showed signs of compromise.
General Manager Brian Cashman a few days ago, went on to say, “We'd like to obviously have both of those guys back, no doubt about it, and try to find a way to improve the club at the same time.” Now it seems the deal has come
through. Mariano has signed a 2 year, $30 million contract, while Jeter’s salary is packed for a 3 year $65 million deal.
Cashman recently said, "We'll have a press conference about that. Everybody's professional. Just like [rappelling down a building], it takes a lot of work to get it right, and just like that, it takes a lot of work to get it right.
And, obviously, we'll be in a position to announce how we got it right soon."
Jeter’s contract figures range from $51 million to $65 million. However, if the player has agreed to the deal, it means he’s finally conceded to the challenge of earning more. He made above $20 million this year on a 10 year contract.
Things will surely be different for the 36-year old shortstop, when he returns to the game in April.
