New York Yankees offensive outburst stun Oakland Athletics 10-9 – MLB Update
New York Yankees showed great fighting abilities as they edged past the Oakland Athletics 10-9 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Saturday, September 22 in second game of their three match series.
Manager Joe Girardi will be extremely pleased to see his team learning from their mistakes. Yankees secured a narrow 2-1 win in series opener and they continued to impress the critics in Game 2 to take a decisive 2-0 series lead.
Starting pitcher Ivan Nova looked completely out of sorts as he gave up five hits and three runs in just over two innings. Freddy Garcia was also unable to stop the flow of runs as he allowed three runs on four hits in just three innings. Relief pitcher
Cory Wade grabbed his first win of the season after pitching the perfect ninth.
Ichiro Suzuki homered to right in the first inning to put New York on the board. Robinson Cano, Andruw Jones, Alex Rodriguez and Raul Ibanez made useful contributions with the bat to keep Yankees in the contest.
With score tied at the end of the ninth, the game was forced into the 13th. Suzuki scored on a wild pitch and Ibanez smacked a home-run to right to level the score 9-9. Eduardo Nunez delivered the tie breaking run in the 14th to give
Yankees a memorable victory.
"Right now, every game is magnified, and we know the situation," Ibanez said. "It's a lot of fun."
"I told you all along that I like the fight in this team," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said. "Some of the things we go through, we find ways to get back up."
"I'll give him credit. He didn't compound the problem by continuing to go. He went back to third base," Girardi said. "I'm sure everyone would've seen it and he would've been called out and that would've been the inning."
Credit should also be given to the Athletics for fighting hard right until the end of the contest. It will not be wrong to say that luck was not on their side on Saturday. With their win, the Yankees also maintained their first position at the top of the
American League East Division standings table.
