New York Yankees offensive problems lead to another embarrassing defeat – MLB Update
It was another forgettable night for the New York Yankees’ offence as it failed to find scoring ways against the dominant Detroit Tigers’ pitching. Throughout the American League Championship Series, Tigers’ pitchers created all sorts of problems for the
Yankees’ batting line-up.
Doug Fister provided the Tigers an excellent start to the series as he pitched seven scoreless inning in Game 1. Anibal Sanchez continued the good work in Game 2 to double Tigers’ series lead to 2-0.
Justin Verlander then welcomed the Yankees at Comerica Park, tossing up 8 scoreless innings. Tigers’ starting pitcher in Game 4, Max Scherzer put up a dominant show to keep Yankees on the defensive. Scherzer held the Yankees scoreless in five innings before
giving up a double to Nick Swisher in the sixth.
Overall, Yankees managed to score just six runs in four ALCS games against the Tigers. Out of those six runs, four came against Jose Valverde in the ninth inning of Game 1. New York never held a lead in the series, which shows they were short of confidence.
"You work a long time to get to this point, and to have it end abruptly, it is really, really difficult," manager Joe Girardi said. "We didn't swing the bats. It wasn't one guy, it wasn't two guys, it was a bunch of guys. And it's hard to win when you don't
score runs."
"It's difficult, it's disappointing," Yankees’ General Manager Brian Cashman said in a post game interview. "It's not where we want to be."
"This is never easy," Girardi said. "There is only one team that's going to be happy when the year ends. We know we fell short. We understand that."
Manager Joe Girardi will be devastated with what he saw from the likes of Alex Rodriguez, Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson, Nick Swisher and Ichiro Suzuki in the series.
Already, there are talks of trading Rodriguez. However, A-Rod wants to stay in New York to change the course of his destiny.
With their fourth successive victory over the Yankees, the Tigers locked the American League Pennant and advanced to the World Series for the second time in last six years.
