New York Yankees’ offensive struggles leave them in 0-2 hole – MLB Update
Facing the inform Detroit Tigers without their Captain is not something most Major League Baseball teams will prefer. This is the kind of situation the Yankees are in right now.
Captain Derek Jeter suffered a fractured left ankle in Game 1 of the best of seven American League Championship Series and without him the Yankees are finding it tough to find winning ways against Tigers’ dominant pitching.
Yankees’ starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda was given enough rest to prepare himself for the ALCS game against the Tigers and he lived up to the expectations to provide an 11 strike-out effort. However, it was the Yankees’ offence that once again looked fatigued
in their 0-3 loss on Sunday evening.
"A lot of bad stuff has kind of happened in a short amount of time," Nick Swisher said. "Obviously we lose our captain, we lose these first two games at home. It might be nice to get out of here and get to Detroit and hopefully pull out some wins over there."
"He was outstanding today," catcher Russell Martin said of Kuroda. "For a while there, I felt like he was going to throw a no-hitter. He had great stuff, great command and good composure out there. You really can't ask for anything more than what he did."
Detroit’ starter Anibal Sanchez limited New York to just three hits in seven scoreless innings to lay the foundation of an impressive Tigers victory. Sanchez took complete advantage of the prolonged brownouts through the Yankees’ batting order as the Tigers
posted another comfortable 3-0 win to take a vital 2-0 series lead.
Things are not going to get any easier for the Yankees who will be facing Detroit’s ace Justin Verlander on Tuesday at Comerica Park. Yankees will be looking to regroup and fight back to prolong their season.
They must win two games at Comerica Park or Sunday’s encounter could be the last game played at Yankee Stadium this year.
Nineteen of the 22 teams to take 2-0 lead in League Championship Series have advanced to the World Series and the Yankees will be looking to overcome history to dig out of the hole for a victory.
