New York Yankees outclassed by Tampa Bay Rays 3-8 – MLB news
New York Yankees were completely outclassed by the Tampa Bay Rays 3-8 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida on Sunday, May 26 in the finale of their three match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball regular season.
Credit has to be given to the Rays for showing excellent fighting abilities and mental strength under immense pressure. Yankees had secured comfortable win in first two games of the series and it seemed as if they will crush the Rays with their momentum
to earn a rare series sweep at Tropicana Field but that did not turn out to be the case.
“He was wonderful,” Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. “He was that good.”
Joe Maddon and his men executed their game plan to perfection as they outplayed their American League East Division rivals in almost all aspects of the game. With their win, Rays improved their win-loss record to 25-24 and it will be interesting to see if
they can continue the good work in the upcoming games to have any chance of securing the top spot on the American League East Division standings table.
“I'm hurting the team,” Sabathia said. “Not being able to make pitches with two strikes, fastball command. I feel fine. It's just one of those things where I feel like the ball is coming out pretty good, but I'm just not making pitches.”
Starting pitcher Alex Cobb played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash as he allowed just five hits and two runs in eight plus effective innings to grab his sixth win of the season. Striking out eight batters, he used his fastball and curve balls
to great effect.
“He's missing some pitches and he's not getting away with it,” Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild said. “Every mistake he made, they hit it. Early in the season, he had the same velocity and pitched really well. He was just executing pitches better.”
His counterpart from New York CC Sabathia had a horrible time on the mound as he allowed seven hits and seven runs in seven innings to take his fourth loss of the year.
