New York Yankees over-power Kansas City Royals 3-1 in series-opener - MLB Update
The New York Yankees over-powered league rivals Kansas City Royals 3-1 at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday, May 10 to take a 1-0 lead in the three-game series.
The Yankees, who were coming off a 2-1 series win against the Texas Rangers, started the outing with a positive attitude. The starter, Freddy Garcia entered the plate to make his fourth start of the season and pitched strongly to restrict the opposition
to just one run over six innings. Besides this, Garcia gave six hits and two walks with three strike-outs to earn his second win of the season with a 2.61 ERA.
The struggling Derek Jeter splashed a line-drive for an RBI single off the Royals’ starter Kyle Davies in the third inning to earn an early 1-0 lead. The performance has really helped Jeter to bounce back in the season with a .283 average.
"When things are going well, the results are there," Jeter simply said.
The Yankees could not enjoy an early lead for long as the Royals’ centre-fielder, Melky Cabrera launched a beautiful homer off Garcia in the fourth to tie the game 1-1.
Alex Rodriguez, who has a .262 batting average this season, added a two-run leading RBI double in the bottom of the fifth. Rodriguez was at a 9-for-55 bend of his own and was 5-for-27 with runners in scoring position before he scored an RBI double to lead
the Yankees 3-1.
Rodriguez said, "The last few days have been pretty good. Hitting coach Kevin Long and I have spent a lot of time together, on the field, in the cage."
After Garcia finished his spell in sixth, David Robertson and Joba Chamberlain both tossed one strong inning, did not give any hit and took out two batters each. Closer Mariano Rivera pitched a perfect last inning to earn his thirteenth win for himself and
twentieth for the club.
Jeter said of Rivera, "Mo is one of the few pitchers that can make that play."
The Royals’ starter, Kyle Davies gave away three runs on seven hits, walked one and made three strike-outs for his fifth loss of the season. Davies has a 1-5 record with a 7.08 ERA. Reliever Tim Collins did not yield any run and took out three batters over
two innings. Closer Blake Wood pitched a perfect last inning, but that was not enough to capture a win for his club.
