New York Yankees overcome Seattle Mariners 4-3 – MLB News
New York Yankees continued to impress the critics as they edged past the Seattle Mariners 4-3 at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Tuesday, May 14 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball regular season. With their
win the Yankees improved their record to 25-14 and it will be interesting to see if they can keep up their excellent work to complete another important home series victory.
Surely the Yankees will be looking to continue their incredible winning streak in their upcoming games to replace Boston Red Sox at the top of American League East Division standings table. Starting pitcher CC Sabathia displayed top quality pitching skills
as he allowed just three runs in six plus solid innings, laying the foundations of an impressive Yankees victory but it was relief pitcher Shawn Kelley who walked away win a win after he helped the Yankees come back from behind to claim a slim lead.
"He was feeling it," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said.
"I'm going to be fine," said Hernandez, adding he'd treat his back with ice. "Nothing serious."
"I didn't want to take any chances," Wedge said. "Under any other circumstances, I'm sending him out there. And I wanted to send him out there."
"We had some chances off him, but he basically did what he usually does. He gets people out when they get on. He even gets better," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.
"I was in the middle," Hernandez said.
"It was hard luck," Hernandez said.
With his o.2 scoreless inning, Kelly grabbed his second win of the season. David Robertson also made his presence felt as he pitched the perfect eighth and closer Mariano Rivera saved his 16th game of the season after tossing up the scoreless
ninth.
After the Mariners took the early lead, Robinson Canon showed no signs of nerves, earning a double to deep right centre in the seventh inning to level up the score 3-3. With momentum on their side the Yankees continued to put pressure on their opponents
and eventually prevailed in a nail biting contest.
