New York Yankees overpowers New York Mets, 7-3 for a series sweep: MLB Update
The New York Yankees romped to a 7-3 victory in the second game against the state rivals, New York Mets, at the Yankee Stadium, on Saturday night, May 21, to clinch a series sweep.
The Yankees’ batters swung with full power to crush the Mets, who despite earning an early lead in the top of the first inning could not keep their momentum going and fell four runs short to bear their 23rd loss in 2011 season. Jason Bay and Justin Turner
each scored an RBI each in the first inning to take the Mets to a 2-0 lead.
The Yankees’ Russell Martin launched 396-feet long two-run homer off the Mets' starter, Chris Capuano, in the second inning to tie the game at 2-2. The homer awakened the Yankees bat as they hammered another two-run homer, this time off the bat of Mark Teixeira
who took the lead to 4-2 in the third inning.
After allowing a run to the Mets’ rookie, Justin Turner, in fifth that cut the lead to 4-3, the Yankees again came into action. This time Curtis Granderson launched one run homer and then Alex Rodriguez blistered a 388-feet long one-run homer in the sixth
inning to elevate the lead to 6-3.
"We've been good and bad. Overall, if you look at the numbers, league-wise we are OK. But, I think there is a lot of room for improvement. Besides Curtis, we could all do better," Rodriguez said. "It's important for us to think small ball. To also score
runs on base hits, singles and doubles."
After this homer, the Mets' Manager, Terry Collins, replaced Capuano with Pedro Beato, who tossed scoreless one and 2/3 innings to stop the Yankees form getting more runs. However, closer Taylor Buchholz gave away another run to Teixeira in the bottom of
the eighth inning.
Capuano had a nightmare night, as all four homers came of his pitching. The right-hand ball thrower yielded six runs over five and 1/3 innings in which he also struck out five batters. Capuano, who has given just 11 runs over his previous five starts, lost
his fifth game of the season.
"I think that's the frustrating part for me: I didn't give up a lot of hits, just big ones," Capuano said.
The Yankees' starter, Allan Jones Burnett, tossed six and 1/3 innings, gave away three runs, walked three and took out four batters on exactly 100 pitches to earn his fifth win of the season.
The relievers, Boone Logan, David Robertson, Joba Chamberlain and closer Luis Ayala none gave any run over short innings.
The Yankees' Derek Jeter touched two hits, stole his 326th base to tie the record of Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson.
