New York Yankees pitcher Phil Hughes could miss start of season – MLB Update
New York Yankees starting pitcher Phil Hughes has still some back trouble and might not able to play at start of the season. Yankees manager Joe Girardi also said recently in a local newspaper.
"Is it in jeopardy, his starting? It's possible, yeah, I think it's too early to tell, though. He could probably get away with four starts, So I think it's possible, yeah," Girardi said after the Yankees lost 10-7 to the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday at Steinbrenner Field.
Later Hughes said and explained about his condition, “Every day is worrisome that I'm not throwing. But it's a double-edged sword. I don't want to push this thing and have it become a recurring issue, every day is day lost, so I'm kind of in that in-between zone. I could come in in two days and they could tell me, You're throwing today, I just don't know beyond the pool work what the plan is for me.”
Hughes is a great player and knows his game very well. Last season he also achieved good numbers of 4.23 along with 16-13 win-loss, 165 strikeouts and 1.26 WHIP.
Hughes has also a great career ERA of 4.39 along with 52-36 win loss, 535 strikeouts and 1.29 WHIP. Though he is a great player and has been in the game for quite long now, but still his absence will not make any big difference.
The Yankees’ have already some great starters in the roster including Hiroki Kuroda, Ivan Nova and Andy Pettitte. These all three did a very good job in the last Major League outing and showed good commitment with consistent stats.
Hiroki Kuroda, who pitched with an ERA of 3.32 along with 16-11 win-loss, 167 strikeouts and 1.17 WHIP, certainly proved his valour and now roaring ahead for the coming season.
Nova on the other hand, showed slight reluctance on the mound and did moderately with 5.02 ERA along with 12-8 win-loss, 153 strikeouts and 1.47 WHIP.
Pettitte was also exceptional on the mound and did well achieving 2.87 ERA along with 5-4 win loss, 69 strikeouts and 1.14 WHIP.
