New York Yankees planning to make offer to Rafael Soriano – MLB Update
New York Yankees are planning to make an offer to relief pitcher Rafael Soriano today. However, the deal is not the one Soriano was hoping for. According to a leading sports website, the Yankees are expected to make a $14.8 million offer to the closer, who
replaced Mariano Rivera is May 2012.
The deadline is today but Soriano has not accepted the offer as yet. If Soriano does not accept the offer, he will become a free agent and the Yankees will be eligible for a draft pickup. Under the new Major League Baseball rules, teams can make one year
offer to the players to make sure they have a draft pick if the player decides to sign a contract with some other team.
Yankees’ right fielder Nick Swisher could also be offered a contract nearing $14 million. However, Swisher is likely to reject this offer. The right hander had a great time on the mound last season as he hit .272 with an impressive OPS. Yankees’ Manager
Joe Girardi and General Manager Brian Cashman know the Yankees’ outfield situation is not looking very bright right now.
"It's gonna be awesome to see him out there. He's just looked incredible in batting practice, so it's gonna be fun to see him take that out onto the field," said Swisher.
We battled to get in this spot, and we've got to feel proud about what we've accomplished, ... We just want to keep it going right now; we just need to keep riding that wave," he added.
"I'm being a lot more consistent, trying to make every swing look the same. I'm doing what the situation calls for and trying not to do too much," Swisher said in an interview.
If Swisher departs, the Yankees will be looking to use Curtis Granderson and Brett Gardner in the outfield. Cashman could also decide to bring Torii Hunter from the Los Angeles Angels to strengthen Yankees’ batting line-up. At the moment, Swisher seems to
be the best option the Yankees have. It will be interesting to see if Cashman can make the right offer to retain Swisher.
