New York Yankees prevail 12-8 against Detroit Tigers – MLB Update
New York Yankees finally managed to overcome the Detroit Tigers, prevailing 12-8 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Wednesday, August 8 in third game of their four match series.
Yankees’ Manager Joe Girardi will be extremely happy with the outcome of the game. After emerging victorious in first two games, Detroit was looking to take an impassable 3-0 series on Wednesday but the Yankees lifted their spirits to keep the series alive.
Tigers’ starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez gave up seven hits and seven runs in just three innings to take his second loss of the season. His counterpart from New York, C.C. Sabathia gave up just five runs with seven strike-outs in six plus effective innings.
"You're always upset when you're not able to finish your inning," Sabathia said. "But that's why Joe is the manager and I go out and throw the ball. It worked out."
"We just didn't pitch and all the add-on runs, obviously, killed us," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said.
Eric Chavez provided New York with a dream start as he singled to centre in the first inning to put his side on the board. Curtis Granderson put immense pressure on Tigers with an RBI single to right in the first and he added a three run home-run to right
in the third to stretch Yankees’ lead to 5-0.
Nick Swisher and Mark Teixeira continued the good work in the fourth inning, adding two more runs to the total to give Yankees’ an impassable 7-0 lead.
Brennan Boesch and Prince Fielder displayed some top quality hitting skills in the fourth and the seventh to bring the Tigers back into the contest.
"A pretty good debut with a new team," Leyland said of Jeff Baker who had an RBI single on his debut. "Looks like he knows what the bat is for."
Andy Dirks, Brennan Boesch and Alex Avila made useful contributions in the seventh as Leyland and company reduced the deficit to just 7-8 but the Yankees were determined to be victorious on Wednesday.
Third baseman Jayson Nix and second baseman Robinson Cano drove in crucial runs in the ninth as the Yankees secured a comfortable 12-8 win.
