New York Yankees put a number on Cliff Lee offer
The New York Yankees have finally made their first offer to Cliff Lee. Many ball clubs have been chasing the top agent around for a long time, and it seems that the Yanks were not going to hold off for much longer. Much of the action has boiled down to the
last day of the winter meetings. Free agents in the Walt Disney Swan and Dolphin Resort have been looking to tie up with an interested party, and it seems results are forthcoming.
The top teams in the league are fighting over the best free agents in the market and after the Boston Red Sox snapped up Carl Crawford, the focus has become narrower. Cliff Lee is an attraction that can’t be compared to any, and the top clubs in the region
know all about it.
The Texas Rangers are hoping to retain the player but that seems unlikely now. The Washington Nationals were rumoured to have steamed up a long time offer, but that will have to face a hard contest from the Yanks’ offer, which is valued at $140 million and
is supposed to cover 6 years down the lane.
General Manager of the Yankees’ Brian Cashman has been tied up in Florida, and while he didn’t want to expose news of the offer, he’s made it known to Lee’s agent Darek Braunecker.
Cashman elaborated by saying, "It's not that (Braunecker) hasn't been wanting to take offers. It's better described as when he's to the point where he's willing to close a deal out. He's trying to put himself in a position to make sure he has all the offers
out there. I didn't want to put myself on the board early when it might take someone else four weeks to get their offer up."
Earlier, Yankees’ manager, Joe Girardi spoke of Cliff Lee. He said, "He's a difference maker for any club he goes to. He changes the complexion of the game. When he's up, when he's on the bases, he's a great player. We've had a chance to see him a lot over
the last six or seven years. And he's a pain. That is the type of player he is. You know that any single can be a triple. It's easy for him to score runs."
