New York Yankees rebound with 7-5 win over Oakland Athletics to clinch series 2-1 – MLB Update
The American League’s New York Yankees struck back with devastating impetus and overpowered rivals Oakland Athletics 7-5 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Sunday, July 24 to take the series 2-1.
Oakland Athletics’ short-stop, Cliff Pennington opened the game with his RBI single and third baseman, Eric Sogard elevated the lead to 2-0 in the top of the second inning. The Yankees’ Andrew Jones singled to centre field to reduce the lead by one run and
then Eric Nunez scored an RBI double to take his team to a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Curtis Granderson hammered the only home-run of the game Andrew Jones scored his second RBI to move the game to a 6-2 advantage.
Yankees’ starter Bartolo Colon, after allowing early two runs, made a perfect rebound and completed his seven innings spell to take his seventh win of the season. He also scattered eight hits, one walk and struck-out four batters over 99 pitches to improve
his record to 7-6 with 3.29 ERA.
David Robertson took the responsibility in the eighth inning but could not carry Colon’s impetus and allowed two runs, one each to Hideki Matsui and Kurt Suzuki. His 30 pitches long spell can cause New York a real blow but the Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi
immediately made a change and employed his top closer Mariano Rivera.
Rivera performed as per the expectations of his manager and tossed 23 pitches of his one inning to permit only one run on four hits. The 41-year-old Rivera earned his 25th save of the season. He gained this mark in the 15th consecutive
season.
"I'd be surprised if someone could outdo that," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said. "That's one of those records I don't think anyone will break."
Gonzalez, on the other hand was embarrassed of his seventh loss of the season. He allowed six runs on seven hits, permitted three walks over only four innings spell. Despite having a good 2.67 ERA, his record has moved to 9-7.
His reliever Fautino De Los Santos and Brian Fuentes restricted against the strong batting line-up of the Yankees. De Los took out three batters and permitted only one walk over one inning spell. Closer Joey Devine was good with his 10 strikes of 15 pitches
but allowed a single to the Yankees’ record holder slugger Derek Jeter in the bottom of the eighth inning.
After winning this game and the series, the Yankees have moved one step ahead in their wins and now are on the second place with 59 wins after the Boston Red Sox in AL Eastern division.
