New York Yankees retaliate with 9-2 win over Cleveland Indians – MLB Updates
The New York Yankees came back into form, as they overpowered the Cleveland Indians 9-2 in the second game of the three-game interleague series, at the Progressive Field in Cleveland on Tuesday, July 5.
The Yankees’ batters and starter Carsten Charles Sabathia combined to record the Indians’ 39th loss of the season. Sabathia did not yield even a single in his seven innings and struck-out 11 batters to earn his 12th win of the season.
Sabathia won his fifth consecutive game and he has lost only one in his last ten starts. Now he has a 12-4 record with 2.90 ERA in 19 starts.
As Sabathia pitched flawlessly, the Yankees’ batting line-up took full advantage of it and blistered nine runs in the first eight innings. Francisco Cervelli drove in a single to start a five-run second inning. Then Derek Jeter, having an eye on his 3000
hits entered the plate for his second at-bat and blistered a hard hit to deep-centre for two runs.
Following this, Curtis Granderson launched the first of his two homers in a game off the Indians’ ace Carlos Carrasco to take the game to 5-0 in the top of the second inning. In the fourth inning, he swung his bat again for a dazzling homer against Carrasco
to post a 6-0 lead.
After this inning, the Yankees had to wait for the next four innings for their seventh run. In the eighth inning, Robinson Cano, Nick Swisher and Jorge Posada each scored an RBI single to create an irrefutable 9-0 lead.
Having this lead, the Yankees’ reliever Lance Pendleton also threw a no-score eighth inning to confirm a shut-out over the Indians. Until then, the Yankees were sure to get a shut-out triumph but in the bottom of the ninth inning, Pendleton gave a wobbly
pitch to Lou Marson, who touched it for one run. He gave away another RBI single to Michael Brantley to reduce the winning margin to 9-2.
Carrasco allowed six run on ten hits, walked three and struck-out three batters over four innings to bear his fifth loss of the season. Reliever Frank Herrmann, Josh Judy and closer Joe Smith did not give run over their innings. Chad Durbin allowed three
runs on four hits in a single inning.
