New York Yankees rout Baltimore Orioles 8-5 – MLB Update
New York Yankees showed great fighting abilities as they toppled the Baltimore Orioles 8-5 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Friday, September 7 in second game of their four match series.
Yankees were beaten comprehensively in the series opener, giving up four runs in the eighth inning. Credit should be given to Joe Girardi and company for putting up a solid fight in Game 2 to level the series 1-1.
Orioles played hard as they have done over the last couple of months but the result did not go their way this time around as the Yankees held their nerves to keep the series alive.
With their win, the Yankees also moved back to the top of American League East Division standings table and it will be interesting to see if they can extend their winning streak to ease into the playoffs.
Russell Martin provided Yankees with a dream start as he homered to left in the fourth inning to break the deadlock and put his side on the board.
Scott Pearce smacked a home-run to left in the fourth to take the score to 5-0 in the Yankees favour. Alex Rodriguez made useful contribution with the bat, hitting a home-run to left centre in the fifth inning. Derek Jeter also made his presence felt with
an RBI single to right centre in the ninth inning.
"I had no idea I had 300," Rodriguez said. "The only numbers we're worried about right now is W's. Whatever you are going to do for the year is already done. The numbers are done. We're worried about one thing and that's winning games."
"It was huge," Rodriguez said of the win. "Every game from now on is huge, especially when you get to September. One of the challenges I have for the offense is that we should be able to score six runs every night. If we're disciplined and put up great at-bats,
six runs is a good number."
Starting pitcher Phil Hughes produced a match winning performance as he gave up six hits and three runs in just six innings to grab his 14th win of the season.
