New York Yankees rout Detroit Tigers 4-3 in series finale – MLB Update
New York Yankees fought past the Detroit Tigers 4-3 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Thursday, August 9 in the finale of their four match series of 2012 Major League Baseball.
Tigers had won first two games of the series pretty convincingly and they had an excellent chance to sweep the Yankees to grab the top spot on American League Central Division standings table.
However, despite having momentum on their side, Jim Leyland and his men were unable to maintain their good form in the final two games and the Yankees fought back superbly to level series 2-2.
Raul Ibanez tripled to deep centre and Ichiro Suzuki singled to left in the second inning to put the Yankees 2-0 ahead. The Tigers were also in no mood to go down without a fight.
Alex Avila helped his side bounce back strongly in the fifth as he connected for a two run home-run to right to level the score 2-2. Andy Dirks also made his presence felt with an RBI double to left in the fifth.
With a 3-2 score lead in the fifth, the Tigers were the favourites to win the game but as they have done so often this season; New York Yankees came back from behind to clinch a thrilling victory.
"It's good that he's sticking up for us," Yankees’ catcher Chris Stewart said. "It fired us up, obviously."
"It's just nice to get a win -- period," he added. "We've been scuffling lately and things haven't been going our way. It almost seemed like it was going to happen again."
Mark Teixeira and Eric Chavez both homered in the eighth inning to give Yankees a critical 4-3 lead. Relief pitcher Rafael Soriano gave up just two hits in 1.1 innings of relief to hold off the Tigers.
"I'm extremely happy for what our guys accomplished," New York’s Manager Joe Girardi said in a post game interview. "That doesn't mean I'm not going to get perturbed when I get a letter."
Starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda also had a decent time on the mound as he allowed just three runs in six plus innings to lower his ERA to 3.24.
