New York Yankees rout Los Angeles Angels 6-5 in series opener – MLB Update
New York Yankees continued their impressive winning streak after the All Star Break as they edged the Los Angeles Angels 6-5 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Friday, July 13 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball
regular season.
Angels’ left-fielder Mark Trumbo had another excellent outing as he homered for the fifth straight game against the American League East leaders but the Yankees rallied for a 6-5 win on Friday.
Credit must be given to Mark Teixeira who displayed some top quality hitting skills to help New York come back from behind to clinch a stunning victory.
Erick Aybar homered to right in the third inning to break the deadlock and give the Angels a crucial 1-0 lead. Teixeira hit a two-run home-run to left to help the Yankees claim a 2-1 lead.
Trumbo looked very comfortable on the mound and his three run home-run to left-centre in the seventh put the Angels 4-2 ahead.
"Yeah? I guess, pretty cool," Trumbo said. "But if it wasn't enough to get a win, it's just a novelty."
Albert Pujols also joined the party with a ground rule double to right as Los Angeles took complete control of the situation but Joe Girardi and company were not prepared to give up.
"It's a new start," Teixeira said. "The first half really doesn't mean anything."
"I think it's important for him," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said in a post game interview. "I always talk about how players want to feel they're contributing and he had a great night tonight.”
Teixeira homered to left in the eighth and Derek Jeter and Curtis Granderson reached bases safely to level the score 5-5. Russell Martin wrapped up an impressive Yankees’ win with a single to right in the eighth.
Chad Qualls got his first win with the Yankees and relief pitcher Rafael Soriano gave up just a hit in his scoreless inning.
C.J. Wilson, Angels’ starting pitcher, pitched seven effective innings, allowing just two runs with seven strike-outs but he did not reap the rewards.
