New York Yankees rout Tampa Bay Rays 6-4 – MLB Update
New York Yankees put up a fine performance as they floored the inform Tampa Bay Rays 6-4 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida on Wednesday, September 5 in the finale of their three match series.
Yankees should be given credit for creating all sorts of problems for the American League East Division rivals. After suffering humiliating losses in first two games of the series, Joe Girardi and company needed to regroup themselves and fight back and that
is exactly what they did on Wednesday evening.
With their win, the Yankees also reclaimed the number one status on the AL East standings table and it will be interesting to see if they can extend their winning streak to make it to the playoffs.
Starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda had a great time on the mound as he gave up just four runs in six solid innings to pick up his 13th win of the season. Relief pitchers Boone Logan, David Robertson and Rafael Soriano also pitched with great control
and accuracy to help New York avoid an embarrassing series sweep.
"Buck has them playing good baseball," New York shortstop Derek Jeter said in a post game interview. "They're right there. It's going to be tough for us."
After Tampa Bay took an early 1-0 lead, Alex Rodriguez doubled to left in the fourth inning to put Yankees on the board. Russell Martin also made his presence felt, hitting a ground rule double to deep right in the fourth to give his side a crucial 3-1 lead.
"It's a break we got," said Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi, who called for a team meeting before the game. "Hopefully (the victory) just propels us to play good baseball."
"There's no question ... it's sink or swim time," Rodriguez said with a smile on his face. "In order for us to swim, we'll have to swim the right way. We're going to start playing the brand of baseball we started tonight."
Martin later connected for a solo home-run and Derek Jeter broke the tie with an RBI groundout to fielder choice in the seventh.
The Yankees will be happy with their performance as they managed to get their offence to fire and take a decent win over the Rays.
