New York Yankees’ second series sweep over Baltimore Orioles in 2011 season – MLB Review
The New York Yankees had a tough time at Rogers Centre in Toronto against the Toronto Blue Jays and the two-game series tied at 1-all. Yankees lost the first outing after an electrifying competition but Bartolo Colon managed to take the club back into the
series with his destructive pitching.
After facing trouble by the Blue Jays, the Yankees went to Maryland for another three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The first series between the clubs had landed in favour of the Yankees, who snatched it 2-0 because
the first game had been postponed due to rain.
This time again, the first outing of the series was postponed due to rain and the Yankees had free time to decide about the rotation for the next outing.
On April 23, Carsten Charles Sabathia started the second outing and managed to take his first win of the season. He held the opposition scoreless in his first seven innings and struck-out seven batters. Left-hander gritty hurler allowed a three-run homer
to Adam Jones in the seventh inning but it did not destabilise him. He completed his eight innings and helped the Yankees to a 15-3 win.
The Yankees’ batting destroyed the Oriole’s complete pitching depth. Russell Martin launched two homers, Jorge Posada, Brett Gardner and Alex Rodriguez each hammered one homer. Russell Martin started a home-run derby in the sixth inning with his three-run
hit and then Posada launched a two-run homer in the eighth.
Martin added another, but this time for one run to left-centre. Alex Rodriguez did not wait long and splashed a grand slam to take his club to a 13-3 lead. Brett Gardner closed down the game with his two-run homer in the ninth inning.
Rodriguez’s grand slam had great value for Girardi, who said, "Maybe that extra day did help him. I saw him and he looked OK, but you know he had a low-grade fever and wasn't feeling great."
It was the first outing of the season in which the Yankees launched more than four homers. Girardi was pleased and was sure to win another shut-out series over the Orioles.
In the next outing, the confidence of the Yankees was high and they were sure of an easy victory. However, the Orioles were not ready to succumb cheaply as they showed strong resistance in the second half of the game. Yankees managed to win the game 6-5
in the eleventh inning for a series sweep but it was tough to overcome the wounded Orioles.
Curtis Granderson gave the Bronx Bombers a 2-0 lead with his two-run homer in the top of the first inning and then Alex Rodriguez earned an RBI single to advance it to 3-0 in the fifth inning.
With a three-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh, Mark Reynolds gave a two-run homer to Joba Chamberlain to reduce it to 3-2. One inning later, Brian Roberts tied the score at three-all and forced the outing to extra innings.
Hurlers from both sides did not allow runs until the eleventh inning. Boone Logan and Buddy Carlyle saved the game for the Yankees while Russell Martin, Derek Jeter and Curtis Granderson each added an RBI single to post a 6-3 lead in the top of the eleventh
inning. Carlyle tossed six hitless pitches to help the club snatch another series sweep over the Orioles.
After another series win, the Yankees now had to take on the Chicago White Sox in a four-game series for the first time in the 2011 regular season at Yankee Stadium from April 25 to 28.
