New York Yankees shatter 4-game skid beating Los Angeles Angels 6-5 – MLB Update
New York Yankees managed to shatter their four-game skid with some promising performance both from their bat in the 6-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels in the rubber outing of the three-game series at Angel Stadium in Anaheim on Sunday, September 11 to avoid
a series sweep.
Mariano Rivera posted another record with his 599th career save with the help of a debutant catcher Austin Romine. With the Angels looking to get their first series whitewash against the Yankees in this season, Rivera landed at the mound with
a 6-5 lead and closed down with his one-hitter 14 pitches long ninth.
Rivera is now just two saves behind Trevor Hoffman’s Major League Baseball record.
"We got a little bit lucky today," said Rivera. "That's part of the game, but we won."
Yankees being an American League leader and in close contest with Boston Red Sox have received severe damage in the last four outings but they are still in a position to enter the postseason as a leader.
Freddy Garcia was about to donate the contest to the Angels with his loose pitching. Right-hander received seven hits and five runs over his five innings. He also allowed three walks and two home-runs that became a real problem for the Yankees. Henley Kendrick
smashed him in the first and then Peter Bourjos damaged him in the fourth.
However, the Yankees’ batting line-up awakened in the right time to get back into the game. Trailing 2-0, third baseman Eric Chavez drove in an RBI single to reduce it to 2-1 in the top of the second inning.
Angles took it to 3-1 in the bottom of the third but Robinson Cano expressed his regular form and stroked a dazzling one run homer to shorten it to 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning. Angels again widened the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
Curtis Granderson blistered a 394-feet long two-run home-run off the Angels’ starter Ervin Santana in the top of the fifth inning to reduce the lead to 5-4. In the seventh inning, Mark Teixeira hit a sacrifice fly to deep-centre, allowing Brett Gardner and
Derek Jeter to score lead generating runs.
"We've lost a lot of tough games," said Mark Teixeira. "We're beat up, very tired, but ... we needed a break like that. We've been through a lot lately, and for us to scratch this one out, we could smell it. Once we got that lead, we weren't going to give
it back."
David Robertson tossed a perfect eight and handed the ball to Rivera to give him a chance to snatch his 40th save of the season.
Yankees are still the leader of the AL and are hopeful to move into the postseason with some extraordinary performances under their belt.
