New York Yankees shutout Chicago White Sox 6-0 in rain-shortened game – MLB Update
New York Yankees’ starter Phil Hughes marshalled in the club’s rain-shortened 6-0 shutout over the Chicago White Sox in the second game of the four-game series at the U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago on Tuesday, August 2.
The dazzling hurler has thrown six scoreless innings and has taken four-batters on strike-out when heavy rain started and delayed the game. After 51 minutes of delay, the game restarted and the Yankees’ batting added two more runs but another shower of a
heavy rain forced the umpires to declare the game in the Yankees favour.
Hughes allowed only three hits and tossed 48 strikes of 65 pitches to get his second win of the season. His record improved 2-3 with 6.93 ERA in eight starts.
Yankees’ batting was also enjoying good weather as Robinson Cano doubled to deep centre, allowing Derek Jeter to score in the first inning. Russell Martin launched a homer to left-field for one run in the top of the second inning. Then Mark Teixeira hammered
a dazzling two-run homer to elevate the lead to 4-0 in the top of the third inning.
While the White Sox starter John Danks was receiving blows, their batting line-up struggled against the gritty sinker of Hughes. Juan Pierre, Omar Vizquel, Carlos Quentin, Adam Dunn and Alexei Ramirez remained in a struggling condition. Danks made little
rebound and tossed two three scoreless innings to complete his six innings, but failed to save him from his ninth loss of the season.
The rain provided the White Sox a chance to gather their losing impetus and retaliate in a destroying fashion, but their camp could not bear the heavy pressure of the Yankees strong batting line-up. As the rain stopped and game started after 51 minutes,
White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen employed Jason Frasor to create some variation.
The Yankees however did not take it as a change and Mark Teixeira smashed a homer to welcome Frasor, followed by an RBI single from Andruw Jones to take the lead to 6-0 in the top of the seventh inning.
Before the Yankees start their bottom half, the rain started again and forced the game to be decided without further play.
This win took the Yankees to 2-0 lead in four-game series and to 66th win in 2011 regular season.
