New York Yankees shutout Oakland Athletics 5-0 in series opener - MLB Updates
The American League’s New York Yankees romped to a 5-0 victory in the first game against the Oakland Athletics 5-0 at the Overstock Coliseum on Monday, May 30 to take a 1-0 lead in three-game series.
The Yankees’ starter Bartolo Colon had an outstanding day with the ball as the pitcher threw nine-shutout innings to achieve his club’s 29th win of the season. The 38-year-old veteran hurler allowed just four no-score hits and struck-out six batters in his
tenth start of the season.
He allowed his first hit to Athletics’ Josh Willingham on the first pitch of the second inning and then his next allowed hit came in the sixth inning to Coco Crisp. He allowed his third hit in the eighth and fourth hit in the ninth inning.
On the other side, Mark Teixeira hammered a 395-feet long two-run homer off Athletics’ starter Trevor Cahill to kick off the first inning. Robinson Cano, who had an edge of leading off many games in this season, scored the third run with an RBI single to
post a 3-0 lead over their league rivals.
"I made a bad pitch and he made me pay for it," Cahill said. "Other than that, in a game like this against a team like that, you make a couple mistakes and that's all it takes."
After allowing this run, Cahill struck back impressively and held the Yankees scoreless until the seventh when Derek Jeter hit a sacrifice for an RBI single after Brett Gardner occupied third and Francisco Cervelli second base. Cahill’s six innings spell
finished after this hit.
Allowing four runs on four hits and walking five batters put Cahill under his third loss that made his record 6-3 with 2.31 ERA this season.
Craig Breslow replaced Cahill and dominated with the ball as he did not consume any hits apart from one that he gave in the bottom of the eighth inning to Yankees’ Kurt Suzuki. Craig threw one inning and struck-out three batters before handing over the ball
to closer Brad Ziegler.
Ziegler could not carry the momentum produced by Breslow and gave away two hits for an RBI single to put his team in a 5-0 shutout.
