New York Yankees shutout Toronto Blue Jays 5-0 – MLB News
New York Yankees continued to impress the critics, as they secured a comfortable 5-0 win against the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Friday, May 17, in the opening game of their three match
series of the 2013 Major League Baseball regular season.
Manager Joe Girardi will be extremely happy with what he has seen from his men so far this season. Yankees’ win against Blue Jays on Friday was their 26th of the season and they have been
beaten only 16 times. It will be interesting to see if they can continue the good work in their upcoming games to consolidate their position at the top of American League East Division standings table.
Yankees’ pitching rotation played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash. Starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda pitched with great control and accuracy, as he allowed just two hits in eight solid innings. Striking
out batters at regular intervals, he ensured the Yankee established complete control over the contest.
"All my pitches were pretty good," Kuroda said in a post game interview. "Felt good, especially in the first inning when I struck out (Jose) Bautista and Encarnacion. One thing we do pay attention to is some
of his pitch counts because he's not 25 either, but he goes out there and sometimes he acts like he is," Girardi said. "So we have to make sure we don't get confused and forget how old he is and that we take care of him; we're responsible with him and make
sure he can bounce back every start because that's what you want."
Relief pitcher Preston Claiborne also played his part as he pitched the scoreless ninth to help the Yankees hold on to their five run lead. For the Blue Jays, starter Mark Buehrle gave up six hits and five runs
in six innings to take his third loss of the season.
Robinson Cano grounded out to second in the first inning to put Yankees on the board. Shortstop Jayson Nix doubled the lead to 2-0 with a sacrifice fly hit to left in the fifth inning.
