New York Yankees shutout by New York Mets 1-2 – MLB news
New York Yankees were shutout by their neighbours New York Mets 1-2 at Citi Field in New York, NY on Tuesday, May 28 in the finale of their two match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball regular season.
Credit should be given to the Mets for using their home conditions superbly in a game that turned out to be a thriller in the end. Both teams struggled to score runs despite getting a number of scoring opportunities. It will not be wrong to say that the Mets showed better composure and desire to prevail. With their win, the Mets also completed a rare series sweep against their archrivals.
“Hopefully, it's the last one,” closer Mariano Rivera said. “It has been great, everywhere I've been this year. And tonight everything was great -- until the ninth.”
Yankees, on the other hand, will be extremely disappointed with the outcome of the series. Despite putting a brave fight in both games, they failed to find winning ways. It will be interesting to see if Joe Girardi and his men can regroup and fight back to reclaim the top spot on the American League East Division standings table.
Yankees’ starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda produced a powerful performance as he allowed just four hits in seven scoreless innings. Striking out batters regularly, he put his team in the driving position but the night belonged to Mets who came back from behind to clinch a thriller.
“I think we surprised ourselves,” Wright said after batting in the tie breaking single. “Because when you get Mo coming in, it's usually game over.”
“He's an ultimate competitor. He's an animal out there,” Wright said. “I wish we could score some more runs while he's out there and get him some wins, because he deserves it.”
Closer Mariano Rivera had a forgettable time on the mound as he allowed three hits and two runs in the bottom of the ninth to take his first loss of the year. Relief pitcher David Robertson pitched the perfect eighth but his effort also went in vain.
