New York Yankees sign Ben Francisco to minor-league deal – MLB Update
The New York Yankees took a wise decision by signing veteran Major Leaguer Ben Francisco to a Minor League deal.
“I think he’s definitely worthy for the competition, So we’re going to take a look at him,” general manager Brian Cashman said.
Francisco played a good last season with the Tampa Bay Rays achieving .240 hitting average along with four home runs, 15 RBIs and .285 OBP. Overall he also carries a good career hitting average of .257 along with 49 home runs, 189 RBIs and .326 OBP.
The Yankees’ management is currently slight worried over Mark Teixeira’s condition. He is injured and Yankees need to find a potential replacement as well.
The recent inclusion of Francisco is a good thing that the Yankees could use him to fill the spot. The Yankees GM also thinking to add some experience players. News is coming that he wants to sign Chipper Jones.
"Don't you think Chipper would be a perfect fit? I would take Larry in a heartbeat. If Larry was interested in playing the team he's got there in Atlanta would be the easiest to come back to,” Cashman asked reporters in the clubhouse before the Cardinals-Yankees game.
Later Jones said, “Enough with the rumors! While I am flattered about the speculation of being enticed out of retirement, I'm happy with life as a bad golfer.”
Jones last played for the Atlanta Braves in 2012 Major League season and showed good commitment. He achieved consistent numbers of .287 hitting average along with 14 home runs, 62 RBIs and .377 OBP.
Overall he has also a very good career record of .303 hitting average along with 468 home runs, 1623 RBIs and .401.
Some experts also say that Jones is not the only player whom the Yankees pursuing but former Major Leaguer Derrek Lee is also on their agenda.
Lee is a former Pittsburgh Pirates player and considered to be one of the best players who ruled the game for more than a decade. His career stats show his true commitment to the game which is quite consistent at .281 hitting and .365 OBP.
