New York Yankees’ slugger Mark Teixeira‘s knee hit by fastball - MLB News
As if losing to historical arch rivals, the Boston Red Sox wasn’t enough, the New York Yankees almost lost their slugger Mark Teixeira as well. A fastball that was delivered by Boston’s Jon Lester ended up going towards Teixeira’s knee, rather than the original
location which was the bat. Immediately after, Teixeira was writhing in pain and lay down on the ground clutching his knee in despair.
The ball came in the first inning of the match and Teixeira was taken out of the game immediately afterwards. The Bronx Bombers had anticipated him to be out for the rest of the series against the Red Sox but fortunately for them, the X-Rays have come out
clean. Even though the official diagnosis would be made on Wednesday, for the time being the injury is being termed as a right knee contusion.
The slugger will undergo a check up again on Wednesday and until then, manager for the Yankees, Joe Girardi has expected that Teixeira will be absent from the field.
This comes as a surprise because no one would have expected Teixeira to go without any broken bones after he was escorted off the field with the help of two men due to Mark’s inability to support his own weight after the hit.
The Yankees are surely relieved to know that the player with the hottest performance in the team isn’t heading down to the Disabled List. With short-stop and Captain Derek Jeter underperforming and Alex Rodriguez being a shadow of his former self, the Yankees
would’ve been in trouble without Teixeira.
Teixeira should be lauded for getting right back in the line-up just a day after the injury. Even though he wasn’t giving his 100 percent it was a refreshing to see him trying to tough up and play in an age where players choose not to perform even if they’re
feeling the slightest of discomfort.
Mark’s batting average is at .284 along with which he has 291 home runs and 1,373 hits under his belt. His on base slugging percentage is .912 and Teixeira has batted in 944 runs. The player has been a part of the Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Angels and the
Atlanta Braves before coming to settle with the New York Yankees. He has two esteemed All Star selections to his name in addition to four Gold Glove and three Silver Slugger Awards.
Even though his start last year was a career low at .256 with only 33 home-runs and 108 runs for the entire season was anything but impressive, this year has been different. He is currently one of the irreplaceable players in the Yankees’ line-up.
