New York Yankees stun their crossroad rivals New York Mets 6-5 at Citi Field – MLB Update
New York Yankees stunned their crossroad rivals New York Mets 6-5 at Citi Field in New York, NY on Sunday, June 24 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Mark Teixeira hit a sacrifice fly to right in the third to put the Yankees on the board. Nick Swisher homered to centre to extend Yankees’ lead to 4-0.
The Mets bounced back strongly in the fifth and the sixth to level score 5-5 but Robinson Cano stood in their way as he hit a tie breaking home run in the eighth to help his team win for the 14th time in last 18 road games.
"We feel like we can beat everybody. We never go into a game saying, 'We'll probably lose this one because this guy's hot,'" Yankees slugger Mark Teixeira said. "When people say, 'You can't beat him,' we go, 'OK, we'll prove you wrong.' It's kind of fun."
"I didn't have a great knuckleball. It was just coming out wobbly a little bit. I kept searching for it," Dickey said.
"It's up to me to be able to pick these guys up," said ace C.C. Sabathia. "I didn't make good enough pitches with two strikes."
In some ways, it was a huge win for the Yankees, who had lost three out of their last four prior to this game. Familiar with the conditions, the Mets were certainly the favourites to win this series but despite having all the odds stacked up against them,
the Yankees never gave up. Not even R.A. Dickey’s clever knuckleballs could stop them from putting up another masterful show.
The Mets had the better of their neighbours in series opener to secure a close 6-4 win. Credit goes to the offence that helped the Yankees come back from behind in the following game to level series. In a game that was played on an extremely competitive
note, New York Yankees pocketed another thrilling victory to build up on some much needed confidence.
Joe Girardi and company are now placed comfortably at the top of American League East Division standings with 43-28 record and they are certainly the favourites to win this year’s World Series title.
