New York Yankees suffer humiliating series sweep against Oakland Athletics – MLB Update
New York Yankees were beaten by the Oakland Athletics 4-5 at O.co Coliseum in Oakland, California on Sunday, July 22 in the finale of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Manager Joe Girardi will have a lot to think about these days. Yankees entered the series with a mighty 57-38 record and they were looking for another road trip series victory but the A’s ruthlessly exposed their weaknesses.
After prevailing in first three games of the series, the Athletics were looking to secure a rare series sweep against the Yankees. Coco Crisp drove in the winning run as the players started to celebrate.
It was A’s 11thwalk off win of the season. Team Manager Bob Melvin and several other players gathered around the television to watch the highlights of another late inning win.
"To keep competing after so many games where you're so drained and then compete as hard as we've competed all year in this game, you've got to find that pretty special," A's manager Bob Melvin said.
"The music after the game. The pie in the face versus the shaving cream. It's always a better feeling to win than to lose," Crisp said. "I guess that's the thing that I like the most right now."
Yankees were leading 4-0 in the fourth and it seemed they will hold on to their lead comfortably to avoid the series sweep.
Seth Smith displayed some top quality hitting skills as he hit a tie breaking home-run in the ninth inning to add spice to the proceedings. The A’s rushed out on to the field when Crisp singled to right in the 12th inning.
"I don't think there was anybody in the dugout or in the stands who didn't think we were going to win," Smith said.
Former Detroit Tigers’ third baseman Brandon Inge had an excellent time with the bat as he homered to left in the fifth and Kurt Suzuki also added a solo home-run to help Oakland stay in the game.
Relief pitcher Jerry Blevins put up a masterful performance as he struck-out twice in two scoreless innings to grab his third win of the season.
