New York Yankees taking it slow when it comes to free agent signings -MLB Update
The offseason in Major League Baseball (MLB) might be precious for many teams who look to rebuild and restructure their teams for the new season ahead, but for the New York Yankees, they will be taking it slow and thinking over every decision multiple times
before finalising anything according to the teams’ general manager, Brian Cashman, on Tuesday, November 29, 2011.
According to GM Cashman, the team is already very well versed in all aspects of playing baseball and even though he was tempted a lot when seeing some of the names in the free agent market, he is deciding to take it easy for now.
“I get tempted a lot,” Cashman said by phone Tuesday. “And we definitely have the assets. But we have a lot more patience than we used to have. My job is always to try and make our team better, but my job is not to do it in a dumb way. We’ve got a really
good team, so I don’t feel like I have to do something stupid. If I’m going to do something this winter, I have to feel good about it. I don’t care how big the name is.”
Along with taking it slow, Cashman also described the big names in the market as unable to attract him due to his commitment to not make any decisions in vain. The Yankees GM considers every decision should be made while feeling good about it rather than
just looking at the player and the stats.
Cashman was also reminded of bad decision making in the past years like when they signed Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy back in 2008, both players who failed to play any good on their starting positions with the team. This time, all decisions must be made with
prior planning and clean thinking.
Many would think that Cashman just does not have that passion left in him to take risks and chances, but the GM would rather describe himself as smarter than before, but still aggressive.
“I’m still very aggressive, and I want to do certain things,” Cashman said.
Any major signings should not be expected by the New York Yankees’, a team many players hope to get a spot on.
