New York Yankees thrash Pittsburgh Pirates 10-3 – MLB Spring Training
New York Yankees thrashed Pittsburgh Pirates 10-3 at the George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida in their Grapefruit League encounter of the 2012 Major League Baseball Spring training Session.
Alex Rodriguez, once again, made the difference for the Yankees, getting two hits to raise his spring average to .333. Michael Pineda, who was acquired during the offseason, also displayed some high quality throwing skills as he allowed two runs and three
hits over three innings pitched.
Pirates’ inform batter Andrew McCutchen took runs off Pineda with a two run home run in the first inning. Pineda struck out five with one walk on his 72 pitches.
"It's a good thing to see a young pitcher make an adjustment," Girardi said. "You don't see that from young pitchers. You have to know how to correct things when you're struggling."
Left-handed Erik Bedard gave up four runs and five hits in just over three innings for the Pirates.
"Threw all my pitches, trying to get the pitch count up," said Bedard, who made 68 pitches. "I just tried to mix it up, and you've got to work on everything. (I feel like) I'm in the middle of spring training. When you're not at 100 (pitches) yet, it's hard
to say."
The Yankees will be very pleased with the way they have handled pressure in their last few spring games. After making a poor start to their Spring Training campaign, Yankees’ General Manager and Manager Joe Girardi were hoping to put pieces of the puzzle
together as early as possible.
Girardi looked extremely satisfied with he saw from his players on the field as the Yankees improved their spring win-loss record to 9-9. It will be interesting to see if the Yankees can maintain their good form in their upcoming spring games.
The Pirates, on the other hand, have no one to blame except for themselves. The quality of their game play during the contest was well below the required standards and they ultimately paid the price for their lack of concentration. Considering Pirates’ poor
6-10 win-loss record this spring, it seems the manager Clint Hurdle will have to take a second look at his game plan.
