New York Yankees thrash Tampa Bay Rays 6-2 – MLB news
New York Yankees had a great time on the field as they secured a comfortable 6-2 win against the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Friday, June 21 in Game 2 of their four-match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball regular season.
A lot of credit should be given to the Yankees for making the most of available opportunities in front of their home crowd. With their win, Joe Girardi and company improved their record to 40-33 but they are still five games behind the American League East
Division leaders; the Boston Red Sox. It will be interesting to see if the Yankees can bring some consistency in their results to have any chance of making it to the playoffs.
Starting pitcher David Phelps played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash as he allowed just two runs in five plus solid innings to lay the foundations of an impressive Yankees’ victory. Striking out batters at regular intervals, the right hander
managed to keep the pressure on the Rays for most part of the contest.
“It was a sign that things are starting to be where they should be,” Almonte said through a translator.
“He's been on our radar for a while,” Girardi said, later adding, “the time has arrived.”
“We weren't awful tonight,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said. “We just had some bad baseball luck on our side.”
“His day done, Zoilo Almonte stood in a corner of the Yankees' clubhouse and pulled out a cellphone. As his teammates showered up, got dressed and left, the rookie lingered in his dirt-smudged uniform, talking away,” said ESPN of Almonte’s effort.
Relief pitcher Boone Logan, Shawn Kelley, David Robertson and Mariano Rivera also made their presence felt as they combined to throw 3 plus scoreless innings of relief, helping New York hold on to a slim lead. Robinson Cano hit a sacrifice fly to centre
in the first inning to put Yankees on the board. Ichiro Suzuki grounded out t o pitcher in the third and Zoilo Almonte homered to centre in the sixth to ensure the Yankees reached home safely.
