New York Yankees thrash Tampa Bay Rays 9-4 – MLB News
New York Yankees outclassed the Tampa Bay Rays in every department of the game, as they secured a comfortable 9-4 win at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida on Friday, May 24, in the opening game of their
three match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball.
With this victory, the Yankees reclaimed the top spot on the American League East Division standings table. A lot of credit should be given to Joe Girardi and his men for executing their game plan to perfection.
Starting pitcher, David Phelps, led from the front and allowed just six hits and four runs in seven plus solid innings to put his side in the driving seat. Striking out batters at regular intervals, he ensured the Yankees had complete control of the situation.
"It is what it is," said Granderson, who will see a hand specialist in New York on Monday. "You can't change it right now, you've got to move forward."
"It's sad," Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano said. "It's really tough. He's one of those guys you're going to miss. Hopefully he gets back soon."
"I'm happy that we won the game, but you lost a really good player," Girardi said. "That's never a good thing."
"Pitching won the game for them and not for us," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "I thought we had some good at-bats, but they did beat us on the mound. We have to pitch better to win."
Relief pitcher Boone Logan showed nerves of steel under pressure and closer Shawn Kelly tossed up the scoreless ninth to help New York Yankees hold on to a five run lead. For the Rays, starter Roberto Hernandez
had a forgettable time on the mound as he allowed six hits and five runs in just four innings to take his fifth loss of the season. Relief pitcher, Cesar Ramos and Jamey Wright, also struggled to control the flow of runs as the Yankees tacked up a huge total
on the board.
Jayson Nix singled to centre in the second inning and outfielder Brett Garner smacked a two run home run to right in the fourth. Chris Stewart and Robinson Cano also made useful contributions with the bat.
