New York Yankees upset Kansas City Royals 3-2 – MLB Update
New York Yankees edged Kansas City Royals 3-2 at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Tuesday, May 22 in the second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Humberto Quintero provided the Royals with an excellent start with an RBI double in the third inning. Jeff Francoeur homered in the fourth inning to extend Kansas City’s lead to 2-0. The Yankees responded immediately with Robinson Cano hitting a towering home run to right centre in the fourth to reduce the deficit to 1-2.
Captain Derek Jeter also displayed some high quality hitting skills as he singled to right centre in the fifth to level score at 2-2. The game entered a very interesting phase when Curtis Granderson grounded out to second to give his side a 3-2 lead in the fifth but the Yankees held on to their slim advantage to secure an epic win.
Credit must be given to starting pitcher Phil Hughes for his composure. He allowed just five hits in six solid innings. He struck out seven to beat his Luke Hochevar for the first time this season.
"I don't think there's many other first basemen in the league that could stretch like that and make that play," Hughes said.
"Had 'em all the way," Jeter said.
"It seemed like nothing was a walk in the park tonight," Hughes said.
"It wasn't that pretty, but that was a good win," said Alex Rodriguez in a post game interview. "It felt really good to win a game like this. Sometimes you need a game like this to kind of get you on a roll. Hopefully it's a good sign of things to come. We haven't been winning these kinds of games."
New York made the most of available opportunities in a game that was played on an extremely intense note. Both teams adopted a very aggressive strategy but it was the Yankees who prevailed at the end.
With their win against the Royals, Joe Girardi and company also improved their record to 22-21 and it will be interesting to see if they can put up a similar performance in the finale to win the series.
