New York Yankees upset by Kansas City Royals 3-4 – MLB Update
New York Yankees were upset by Kansas City Royals 3-4 at the Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri on Thursday, May 3 in the opener of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Wasting too many scoring opportunities, the Yankees paid the ultimate price for their unforced errors in a game that was played on a quite competitive note. The Royals won for the first time in their eleven home games this season. Thanks to Eric Hosmer, B Butler, Alex Gordon and Mike Moustakas who displayed some high quality hitting skills to help them take 4-1 lead in the fifth.
For the Yankees, Mark Teixeira had a wonderful time on the plate as he doubled to deep right centre and hit a sacrifice fly to centre to reduce Kansas City’s lead to 3-4 but reliever Jonathan Broxton closed the ninth inning successfuly to shut out the Yankees.
Royals’ starting pitcher Danny Duffy pitched six strong innings to win his second start of the season.
"You've all seen Mo run around here for what, 40 years?" Manager Joe Girardi said. "You can fall off the curb or down stairs and get hurt."
"That's horrible news," Broxton said. "As many saves as he's been out there and as good an athlete as he is, I just hate for bad news. All I can do is wish him the best."
The Yankees will be disappointed with the fact their hitter Mariano Rivera injured himself just before the start of the game. According to sources, the striker was taking part in a routine practice session when he injured his knee. After Yankees’ physician examined Rivera’s knee, it was revealed that he might have to go through a surgery to repair the torn ACL.
"At this point, I don't know," Rivera said. "At this point, I don't know. Going to have to face this first. It all depends on how the rehab is going to happen, and from there, we'll see."
Rivera is one of the key players for the Yankees. At 42 years old, he is also the most experienced player in Brian Cashman’s team. New York is certainly going to miss his presence in the upcoming games.
