New York loses second straight as Anaheim Ducks edge Rangers 2-1 in shootout -NHL Match Update
Anaheim’s Bobby Ryan scored the only goal as Saturday night’s game between New York went into an uncertain overtime followed by a shootout as Ducks managed to edge Rangers, 2-1, on October 8, 2011, at the Ericsson Globe in Stockholm, Sweden.
It was the second matchup of the regular season in which both teams are participating in the 2011 National Hockey League (NHL) Compuware Premier Series against major league teams in foreign, which has now concluded.
For Anaheim, it was a tiring affair to face-off against New York straight after their matchup against Buffalo Sabres on Friday, October 7, in Helsinki, Finland, but for most players, that is what the excitement is all about.
"The schedule was tough because we arrived at the hotel at 3:30 in the morning, but that's what the NHL is all about", Ducks right wing, Teemu Selanne, said. "The good thing is that we won the game".
New York Rangers faced their second straight loss of the 2011-2012 NHL regular season, which has certainly set them back after acquiring a number of concrete players over the offseason.
"Obviously we wanted the wins and the four points coming out of here, but at the same time we've got to take the positives out of it", Rangers captain, Ryan Callahan, said after the matchup. We gotta realize that especially tonight we came back; we didn't
let our guard down. We sustained some pressure in the third and we earned that point”.
Andrew Cogliano scored the first goal of the matchup nearly midway through the first to put Anaheim Ducks ahead by one. The first period was certainly intense as over 35 minutes in penalty time were given to various players for fighting, roughing up, slashing
and high-sticking.
Brad Richards scored the equaliser late in the third and final period of regulation with only 2:15 remaining to force overtime, giving them a second chance at the match.
After a fruitless overtime extension, a shootout was called in which Bobby Ryan scored on Anaheim’s last shot on Henrik Lundqvist followed by a miss to level it by New York’s, Artem Anisimov.
Anaheim Ducks and New York Rangers will now be returning back to the United States to face-off against San Jose Sharks and New York Islanders respectively.
