Ok so this isnt a debate about which city is the best, cause being a Londoner I of course think London is the best city in the world :-) but after a ageing debate with my boyfriend (who used to be a New Yorker) I want it cleared up.... Which city, in terms of geographical size is the largest city? I know New York has a bigger population, but which is the largest city in terms of square footage?

  3. New York ...Ox

  4. Maybe It's Because I'm A Londoner that I Love London Town!

New York, New York, Well as Much as I would Love To, Have Never Been, but in Terms Of Size I Would Plump For NY.

  5. Fascinating stuff you can find on Wiki!

Somewhere below I read The "City" of New York is 304.8 square miles.

As any fool knows the "City of London" is 1 square mile.

Also fascinating as it's the area bounded by the "Griffins" (I think)

Greater London is 609 square miles very close to twice the size of NYC

New York City (officially The City of New York) is a city in New York State, and is the largest city in the United States, with its metropolitan area ranking among the largest urban areas in the world. Founded as a commercial trading post by the Dutch in 1625, it has been the largest city in the United States since 1790. It also served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790. Located on one of the world's finest natural harbors, New York is one of the world's major centers of commerce and finance. New York also exerts global influence in media, education, entertainment, arts, fashion and advertising. The city is also a major center for international affairs, hosting the headquarters of the United Nations.

New York City comprises five boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island each coterminous with the five counties of Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens, and Richmond respectively. With over 8.2 million residents within an area of 304.8 square miles (789.43 km²),[2][3] New York City is the most densely populated major city in the United States.[4][5][6]

Many of the city's neighborhoods and landmarks are known around the world. The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Wall Street, in Lower Manhattan, has been a dominant global financial center since World War II and is home to the New York Stock Exchange. The city has been home to several of the tallest buildings in the world, including the Empire State Building and the twin towers of the World Trade Center.

New York is the birthplace of many cultural movements, including the Harlem Renaissance in literature and visual art, abstract expressionism (also known as the New York School) in painting, and hip hop,[7] punk,[8] salsa, and Tin Pan Alley in music. It is the home of Broadway theater.

In 2005, nearly 170 languages were spoken in the city and 36% of its population was born outside the United States.[9][10] With its 24-hour subway and constant bustling of traffic and people, New York is sometimes called "The City That Never Sleeps" and the "Big Apple."[11]

Greater London is the top-level administrative subdivision covering London, England.[2] The administrative area was officially created in 1965 and covers the City of London (including Middle Temple and Inner Temple) and 32 London boroughs.[2] Its area also forms the London region of England and the London European Parliament constituency. The region has by far the highest GDP per capita in the United Kingdom. It covers 1579 km² (609 square miles) and had a 2006 mid-year estimated population of 7,512,400.[1] It is bounded by the Home Counties of Essex and Hertfordshire in the East of England region and Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Surrey and Kent in South East England. The highest point in Greater London is Westerham Heights, in the North Downs and on the boundary with Kent, at 245 metres (804 ft). The term Greater London was in use before 1965 to refer to a variously defined area, larger than the County of London and often similar to the Metropolitan Police District.[3]

    Steve (In London)

  6. Well, Manhattan itself is on a tiny island about 8 miles long. If you're counting the other boroughs of NYC (Queens, Brooklyn, The Bronx, Staten Island) I believe New York City  is larger.

  7. London is 12,331/square miles (4,761/km²)

and New York is 54,556 square miles (141,299 km²)

    therefore, New York is bigger.

MY HEART BELONGS TO LONDON THOUGH

(Well, actually it belongs to Cambridge, UK - I was born there)

  8. London....

  9. new york! london is too proper

  10. London

    No doubt

  11. new york has the most population, so its bigger in Land size.

  12. New York

  13. London (as in greater London) is far more spread out. New York has the higher population number. but due to high density being higher (quite literally) it is more condensed.

If you compare to Auckland, NZ comparatively low population at 1.5 million, but nearly all low density bungalow (some exceptions) and geography (volcanoes, green parks and two natural harbours) it is really very spread and in land squarage one of the larger cities in the world .

PS I prefer London to NY as well.

  14. Well New York is 304.8 square miles (789.43 km²)

and London is 874 sq. mi. (2,263 km²)

    So london is much larger.

  15. I have tried googling it and there are conflicting views , I just looked  this artical , but not 100% sure .

THE new school census of New York, which has just been completed, and the municipal records of new dwellings and apartments, indicate that the population of the city has increased in a manner so remarkable that the next Federal census will find New York as large if not larger than London.

  16. You can fit 4 Manhattans in London. If that helps
