New Zealand Birds?

Question

do all birds peck at trees? like a woodpecker? I just saw something I have never seen before...a bird (masked by branches) pecking at a tree like a wood-p****r? I have seen a bird cleaning its beck by scaping it on a branch but this was definately pecking!

Merry meet,

A lot of birds tap the wood with their beak to warn off competitors for the same territory or females.  My cockatiels do this.  I'm unfamiliar with the birds in New Zealand other than the Kiwi's.  It might be them.
