Following a mutual agreement between both parties, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) released Jacob Oram early from his NZC central contract, with the all-rounder explaining that he no longer found himself able to commit full-time to the NZC.
Stating that he had considered it an honour to play for the country, and enjoyed his time on the international circuit, Oram said he felt it was now time for him to re-prioritise, and focus on other areas of his life. Expounding on the factors that had led
to the announcement, he cited his age, the upcoming birth of his second child, and the current stage his career was at, as the reasons behind his decision.
While making the announcement, however, he went on to add that he enjoyed the T20 format, and saw it as “a way to stay involved in cricket for a while longer”.
“Fortunately as a professional cricketer I can continue to play some T20 cricket as I transition into the next phase of my life,” Oram said. “If the timing was right, and my form and fitness warranted selection, then I would definitely be available to play
T20 cricket for my country but I have absolutely no expectations of NZC in that regard.”
Since having made his debut in 2001, Oram has gone on to play 33 Tests, 160 ODIs, and 36 T20Is for the national side. In addition, he has also been a frequent participant in T20 tournaments around the world, the most recent being his appearance for Uva Next
in the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 Premier League this year, during which he played a crucial role in guiding the team to the title, claiming 11 wickets at an astonishing economy rate of 3.82.
The NZC, meanwhile, did not completely rule Oram out of selection in the future, but went on to thank him for his services to cricket in New Zealand. Emphasising on the necessity of full-time commitment when playing for New Zealand, chief executive of the
NZC, David White, claimed that Oram might still be considered for national selection if form and fitness permitted it. He concluded by thanking Oram for “his excellent contribution to New Zealand Cricket over the past 12 years.”
