Otago defeated http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Canterbury-c775 by six wickets in the first Plunket Shield match of the 2011-12 season at the Mainpower Oval, Rangiora on the 10th of November, 2011.
Canterbury’s captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Peter-Fulton-c2177, won the toss and elected to bat first on a flat batting track. It proved to be the right decision as Canterbury put on 420 runs on the board in their first innings for the loss of nine wickets before
declaring the innings.

In their first innings, Otago scored 300 runs for the loss of only five wickets, and quite interestingly decided to declare the innings in order to enforce a result in the match and the decision proved to be a fantastic one.

Quite contrary to their performance in the first innings, Canterbury’s batting line-up fell like a house of cards and the whole team was dismissed for 61 runs with only one batsman reaching the double figures.
Wagner was the pick of the bowlers for Otago as he picked up five wickets after giving away a mere 33 runs. Finn and Nathan McCullum claimed a couple of scalps each to help their team’s cause.
Needing 182 runs to win the match on the last day of the match, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/NL-McCullum-c2120 was the stand-out as he remained unbeaten on 64 runs, which came off
only 70 balls with the help of 10 boundaries.

bowler Trent Boult picked up a five wicket haul to break the back of Auckland’s batting.

wickets to put his team on top.

Needing 264 runs to win in the last innings of the match on a difficult track, Northern Districts showed character and fought till the very last ball. However, they fell short by 19 runs.
Adams was the star once again as he picked up a five wicket haul and completed his 11 wickets in the match.
