Wellington 276 v Otago 251 - Wellington won by 25 runs
On Wednesday, February 01, 2012 Wellington won their match against Otago by 25 runs in the ongoing Ford Trophy at Queen's Park, Invercargill.
After winning the toss, Otago chose to field first in a bid to restrict the batting side from posting a daunting total on the board.
They made early inroads when they grabbed their first wicket with only 11 runs on the board as Wellington opener, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Michael-Papps-c1961, perished after playing an innings of 11 runs.
A run later, the batting side lost their second wicket when number-three batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Stephen-Joseph-Murdoch-c91153, found his way back to the pavilion without scoring a run.
After the demise of two quick wickets, opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Josh-Brodie-c1736 and all-rounder James Franklin took charge and forged a commendable resistance against the bowling attack.
With 47 runs on the board, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Otago-c829 struck again by bagging the wicket of Franklin, who departed after hammering 17 runs off 17 deliveries.
By 59 runs on the board, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wellington-c864 had lost four wickets and were looking in a spot of bother as they needed someone to play a formidable innings to at least post a challenging total on the board.
It was then a staggering partnership between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JD-Ryder-c1679 and skipper Grant Elliott that turned the tables in favour of Wellington as both batsmen batted handsomely against a resilient bowling attack.
The duo hammered the bowlers all around the park, giving spectators plenty to cheer about. It was this partnership that actually took the game away from Otago who had originally dominated the game and seemed well set to humiliate Wellington in the fixture.
With 179 runs on the board, the partnership was finally broken when Ryder lost his wicket after playing a stupendous innings of 96 runs.
After Ryder, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Harry-Boam-c1536 came out to provide his skipper a laudable support as the batting side proceeded towards posting a stiff total on the board.
Elliott clobbered 63 while Boam smashed 43 runs to help their side amass 276 runs in 47.5 overs – giving their opponents a rigid target to chase.
From Otago, left-arm pacer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Neil-Wagner-c79182 was the highest wicket taker with four Wellington scalps to his name.
Otago, while batting second tried to give an impressive performance, however, the team failed to overcome the required target as they faltered after posting 251 runs in 47.3 overs.
From Wellington, left-arm pacer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JEC-Franklin-c1684 was the top bowler after taking five wickets.
